Think back to the last meeting you attended and the role of the facilitator. How did she or he impact the meeting’s outcome? As OD practitioners, we are often called upon to design, plan, and run meetings or sessions for our organizations. So it is valuable for practitioners to enhance both knowledge and effectiveness in facilitation.
Join us for this highly interactive session designed to help you:
- Understand where facilitation fits into the field of OD
- Demonstrate and learn some facilitation techniques to include in your OD toolkit
- Explore the role of the emerging “Facilitative Leader” and its implications for OD
- Learn about resources to expand your facilitation prowess, including how to facilitate virtual teams and meetings
Presenters:
Jim Troxel
Jim is a facilitation and training expert specializing in the fields of citizen and employee participation, participative strategic planning, change management, organizational learning, and long-term systemic change. His career in community and organizational development and leadership training spans 40 years and a dozen countries. With his broad knowledge of organizational design, a big piece of Jim’s work is facilitating change and leadership training.
Jim has published and lectured widely. Editing credits include two books, Participation Works: Business Cases Around the World and Government Works: Profiles of People Making a Difference. Jim’s most recent contribution is a chapter titled “Affirmative Facilitation: An Asset-Based Approach to Process Consultation” to The IAF Handbook of Group Facilitation. He has lectured on numerous topics, including personal and organizational change, self-managed teams, the culture of participation, and the recovery of civil society.
In 1996, Jim co-founded Millennia Consulting, LLC, a team of seven professionals serving the public service sector. Jim is a graduate of DePaul University, with a master’s degree in integrated professional studies with a concentration in organizational transformation. Jim serves on the Adjunct Faculty for DePaul University’s School for New Learning.
Jim’s passion for effective group facilitation propelled him to help launch a professional association to meet the field’s growing needs. Now the International Association of Facilitators is active in over 30 countries with a membership base of close to 2000. Jim has established with DePaul University a certificate program in group facilitation in their division of continuing and professional education.
Margaret Sullivan
Margaret Sullivan is the Director of HR and Organizational Effectiveness for Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. Prior to her current role, she was an Associate Partner with Accenture, focusing on designing and program managing organizational development initiatives. She has particular expertise in: facilitating strategic planning, operational, and individual meetings; reorganizing/reinventing teams and objectives to meet emerging strategic needs and opportunities; developing high-quality and accountable organizations; knowledge management; and coaching and mentoring professionals at many levels. She is also an instructor in Northwestern University’s Master’s in Learning and Organizational Change.
Margaret and Jim have worked together on a number of both professional and volunteer facilitation projects over the last 20 years.
