Emotional UnemploymentSM is a term author, Diane Wilson, coined to describe what she saw so often sitting across from clients for almost 18 years. It's that ungrounded feeling from a lack of meaningful work. It comes with a sense of preoccupation, feeling unfocused, and lacking a sense of direction and inspiration. In essence, you can get stuck uncommitted to what you "should" be doing while mired in the longing for something better. This can occur when you've quit or been fired, would like to quit or even be fired and in other situations of career change like retirement or returning to work or school. It exists on a continuum, but is sometimes very difficult.
It's predicted we will all be making 4-6 career changes in our lifetime and so will our employees. Therefore, understanding emotional unemployment and how to get through it will be the focus of our program. Diane's co-presenter is Deborah Murphy, co-author of the upcoming workbook to her book Back In Control: How to Stay Sane, Productive and Inspired In Your Career Transition (Sentient Publications, 2004).
Diane and Deborah's program will draw from a number of coaching exercises and tools proven to help people get past emotional unemployment and be better for the journey. It will provide value for many, including those:
- Coaching individuals to achieve emotional employment and stronger commitments to their work;
- In transition needing resources for the daily mental game of creating changes;
- Looking ahead into retirement or another career wanting to develop key competencies to make their journey smoother.
